TRIPLE SUCCESS FOR MACDONALD ESTATES

Leading Scottish Developer Macdonald Estates are celebrating a unique treble, having secured three planning consents in one week.

The Developer has secured outline planning consent to develop a 50,000 sq ft foodstore at Gallowgate in Glasgow, a 45,000 sq ft foodstore in Gorebridge, Midlothian, and a 35,000 sq extension to Westway Retail Park, Arbroath.

The Gallowgate store is situated adjacent to the Barra’s Town Centre and involves the regeneration of a derelict and brownfield site.  As well as the supermarket, the development will also comprise a community facility and customer car parking on the site bounded by Gallowgate, Hunter Street and Barrack Street.

The Gorebridge development is a joint venture with Arniston Rangers FC, one of Scotland’s longest established Football clubs. The clubs present ground is derelict, and the club have been forced to groundshare in Musselburgh this season. The Macdonald Estates scheme will see their existing, derelict ground redeveloped to provide a 45,000 sq ft Supermarket and the club relocate to a new purpose built facility within Gorebridge.

The Arbroath proposal will see the development of a 15,000 sq ft Supermarket, and a further 20,000 sq ft of non-food retail warehouse accommodation. This is the third Phase of development at Westway Retail Park where Macdonald Estates have previously developed units for Focus DIY, Acorn Pets, Halfords, and McDonald’s Restaurants.

Welcoming the planning decisions, Dan Macdonald, Chief Executive of Macdonald Estates said “In what is undoubtedly an extremely challenging market for the Development Industry I am delighted to have secured these three Planning consents. Macdonald Estates are determined to press ahead with our development programme, and to generate much needed employment and Investment.

"In promoting these development opportunities we have carried out a great deal of research into the economic impact that a foodstore can bring to a community, not just in terms of direct employment, but also construction jobs. These three schemes have the potential to generate over 600 jobs, providing a significant boost to the Local economies, as local residents will have greater monies to spend with existing businesses.”
